LIMAVADY Cricket and Rugby Football Club have regretfully announced the end of the football section of the club on Wednesday 2 September.

For 16 years, the club made its mark in the local football scene and participated in local and regional leagues.

A recent Facebook post celebrated the 16 years of memories, relationships and unforgettable moments as part of the club.

“From our beginnings in the Coleraine Morning League to the North West Football Leagues, we have experienced everything the game can throw at you - promotions, relegations, wins, defeats, good days and difficult ones,” the statement to social media read.

“Above all, we have made memories and friendships that will last far beyond football.

“We have been proud to welcome so many clubs and players to the John Hunter Grounds and Roemill playing fields over the years.

“To everyone who ever travelled to play against us, thank you.

“You helped make those grounds what they were.

“Thank you to every player who pulled on the black or red of Limavady Rugby FC over those 16 years.

“You represented the club with pride, and our belief was always simple, football should be enjoyed, regardless of the result.

“A huge amount of work has gone on behind the scenes over the years, much of it quietly and without recognition.

“There are far too many people to name, but every contribution has been appreciated.

“Sadly, for now, this is where our football journey ends.”

The emotional announcement was received with shock and sadness as supporters of the club made their disappointment known alongside their pride in the club’s achievements.

Footballers, managers and coaches from the past alike commented on the happy times that they had spent at the club, with precious friendships and memories made during their tenure.

Representatives from other regions supported the club, stating that they had always enjoyed the competitive games and were saddened to hear of the news.

Hope is still present that in the future, Limavady Cricket and Rugby Club Football section may someday return to playing competitively again.

Until then, Limavady Rugby FC remains proud of their development and achievements; their announcement continued:

“Football was never just about the 90 minutes.

“It was about the people, the friendships, the dressing rooms, the laughs, the celebrations, the heartbreak and the memories that will stay with us long after the final whistle.

“To every player, coach, volunteer, committee member, supporter and opposition player who played a part over those 16 years, you are part of our story, and that will never be taken away.

“The football shirts may be going away, but the memories never will.

“This may be the end of the football section for now, but the Clubhouse door will always be open.

“Thank you for every tackle, every goal, every pint, every laugh, every long journey and every Saturday spent together; 16 years of countless memories and lifelong friendships.”
