PCSP Chair and Mayor condemn discovery of viable device

PSNI officers and Army bomb disposal experts were called to Ebrington Square in Derry City.
The Chair of Derry and Strabane Policing and Community Safety Partnership (PCSP) and Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council have both condemned the discovery of a viable explosive device in Ebrington Square on Tuesday 27 October.
The viable explosive device was delivered to a hotel in Ebrington Square on Tuesday afternoon, Darren Guy, PCSP Chair said.
“Whoever is responsible showed no regard for the safety of local people, and it could have caused serious harm.”
Mr Guy also emphasised it is a busy part of the city where people are working and enjoying a Halloween funfair during half-term.

Cllr Grace Uí Niallais has expressed her concern and solidarity with everyone impacted.
She said: “This was a serious and reckless incident which has no doubt caused trauma to all involved.
“We will not go back to the past but instead look forward to the fantastic four days of Halloween celebrations ahead. Derry is world-renowned for its Halloween festival, and our focus remains firmly on showcasing the very best of our city and our people.
“Halloween is the best of us and I will be encouraging everyone to come along, enjoy the celebrations and be part of what makes Derry such a special place.”

Mr Guy said the attack is “not representative of this city”, with most residents rejecting “those who would drag us backwards.”
“Halloween should be a week of celebration and enjoyment, and I would encourage everyone to continue to support local events and businesses.”
