The stories, customs and superstitions surrounding the traditional Irish wake will be explored at Limavady Library next month, as part of Libraries NI's Let's Talk About… Death, Dying and Grief programme.

On Friday 20 November at 2pm, storyteller Stephen O'Hara will present The Irish Wake, offering an engaging look at the traditions that have brought families and communities together during times of loss.

For generations, the Irish wake was an important part of community life, providing an opportunity for neighbours, friends and relatives to gather, remember loved ones and share stories.

Stephen, who comes from Cushendun, has a passion for Irish mythology and rural customs.

His storytelling explores the folklore, rituals and superstitions surrounding the wake, bringing together humour, history and humanity.

The event is part of a week-long Libraries NI programme running from 16 to 20 November, exploring how people across different generations and cultures have understood death, dying and grief.

Through history, storytelling, creative workshops and practical guidance, the initiative aims to encourage conversations around a subject that many people can find difficult to discuss.

Chief Executive of Libraries NI Jim O'Hagan said: “Talking about death and grief isn't always easy and sometimes we simply don't know where to begin.

“Libraries are places where people can come together, listen, learn and have conversations about subjects that matter.

"What this programme does is approach death and grief from very different perspectives. Some events look at the traditions and stories that have shaped how we think about death, while others focus on grief as we experience it today.

“We hope that by opening up these conversations, we can make a difficult subject a little easier to talk about."

The Irish Wake takes place at Limavady Library on Friday 20 November at 2pm.

The event is free, but booking is essential. Telephone 028 7776 2540 or email [email protected].
